Library Haul and What I'm Reading Now Vol. III

Library Haul and What I'm Reading Now Vol. III

It’s been a while since I shared a library haul/ what I’m reading now. Mostly, because we have been working our way through books we received as gifts at Christmas. But, also because I’ve been consuming a lot of political news (podcasts, articles, hot takes, etc.) lately. Which, is, of course, the worst possible media to be consuming these days. I should know better.

Suffice to say, I am woefully behind in my 2020 reading goal of a book a week. Oh well. The year is young. And I have read a few things, so that’s something.

I’ve been on a bit of a nonfiction kick. A very good friend sent me, “The Way of the Rose: The Radical Path of the Divine Feminine Hidden in the Rosary” by Perdita Finn and Clark Strand. I have a lot of thoughts on this particular book that I will hopefully share here soon.

I also read “Introverted Mom” by Jamie C. Martin. Understanding my temperament and the temperament of my children has been a game-changer for me, not just as a mother, but as a person. I’ve read a lot on the subject of personality and temperament over the years, so the info in the book wasn’t new. It was, however, reassuring to hear anecdotes from other introverted moms out there struggling to recharge their batteries.

I’m part of a sort of bookish, Catholic women’s Facebook group, which is how I heard about “Introverted Mom” in the first place. That’s also where I heard about “Theology of the Home” (the book). I’ve known about Theology of the Home the blog and their daily collection of what’s amazing on the internet for a while now. In fact, they were kind enough to include one of my blog posts in a daily round-up last fall.

The book is gorgeous and a light read. It’s functioning more like a coffee table book for me but is also full of great insight. It would make a lovely gift.

All the above-mentioned books were gifts or items I purchased. But, we did actually make it to the library this week.

My 12-year-old has been working his way through a few of the Magnus Chace books and has had some assigned reading for school, so we didn’t pick up much for him. I did spot a WWII historical fiction that seemed right up his ally and grabbed it “just in case.”

The 5-year-old continues to curate a collection of: wrong holiday, book in a series, something very random, etc. I know his style by now and have gotten in the habit of picking up a few things for him on my own to add to the stack.

I’ll also admit (only somewhat begrudgingly) that I picked up a few American Girl books from the children’s section to read. There was a display case of dolls and books at the library and I just couldn’t help it. Of course, my beloved Kirstin’s books were gone. Undoubtedly scooped up by you know, an actual child. And, not a sentimental woman in her mid 30’s looking for a little hit of nostalgia.  I settled for Samantha.
